The article compares the history of naturism (or Freikörperkultur – FKK) on French and Yugoslavian Mediterranean islands between the 1930s and the 1980s. The focus is on the Île du Levant, located about 15 km southeast of Toulon, and the Adriatic island of Koversada, located directly by the small Istrian town of Vrsar in Croatia. Both Mediterranean islands are united by their outstanding importance for the development of naturist tourism in the second half of the twentieth century. And this is a matter of both national and transnational impact. For the Île du Levant and Koversada were important places for the emergence of transnational, European nudist tourism with economic significance. These locations paved the way for the development of further nude tourism offers in France and the former Yugoslavia. This essay offers a perspective on the history of naturism linking Western and Southeastern European developments.
