Comparative Southeast European Studies 74, no. 1, 2026, is available in open access.

The issue features a multidisciplinary thematic section entitled Understanding Ageing in Southeastern Europe, guest-edited by Vladimir Kozlov (Astana) and Zoran Vesić (Belgrade).

In this thematic section, focusing on Bulgaria and Romania, Aurelia Borzin (Iaşi) and Kristiyan Hristov (Sofia) discuss the different forms of care service provision for older people and the associated challenges.

Radoslava Guirguinova (Stuttgart) focuses on the urban environment in Bulgaria and its effects on the quality of life of older people. 

Olga Gagauz and Valeriu Prohnițchi (both from Chişinău) further examine inequalities and urban-rural income differences among older people in Moldova. 

Concluding the thematic section, Nazlı Şahanoğulları (Istanbul) discusses the challenges faced by Türkiye's pension system.

The issue also includes the contribution by Dimitar Nikoloski (Prilep) on intra-regional labour mobility in the Western Balkans and an open section on informal caregiving in the Western Balkans, discussed by Nataša Todorović and Milutin Vračević (both Belgrade). 

As usual, the issue also contains four book reviews.
