Volha Bartash ist Historikerin und Ethnologin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Geschichte und Kultur der Roma und Sinti, die Folgen des nationalsozialistischen Genozids sowie Erinnerung und kulturelles Erbe in Ost- und Ostmitteleuropa. Sie studierte Geschichte und Ethnologie an der Belarussischen Staatlichen Universität in Minsk. 2010 verteidigte sie ihre Dissertation am Krapiva-Institut für Kunst, Ethnografie und Folklore der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften von Belarus und erhielt im Jahr darauf den Doktorgrad. In ihrer Dissertation befasste sie sich mit der Kultur und der sozialen Organisation der Roma in Belarus sowie den Veränderungen, die sich durch die sowjetische Sesshaftmachungspolitik ergaben.
Sie erhielt Forschungsstipendien am United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, am Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, am Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust-Studien und am Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena. Zudem war sie Gastwissenschaftlerin an der Universität Uppsala. Von 2018 bis 2021 war sie als Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow am IOS tätig, wo sie das ROMPAST-Projekt zur Erinnerung an und Repräsentation des nationalsozialistischen Genozids an den Roma in Belarus und Litauen durchführte. Anschließend war sie in Forschung und Lehre an der Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies sowie an der Universität Münster tätig. 2025 war sie Mitbegründerin des internationalen Forschungsnetzwerks „Margins of Memory: Cultures and Politics of Non-Hegemonic Remembrance“, das vom Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus unterstützt wird.
Seit Juni 2026 ist sie Forschungsgruppenleiterin am IOS und leitet dort das Projekt „EMPOWER: Empowering Legacy: Sites of Romani Genocide and Community Commemoration in East and East-Central Europe“, das mit einem ERC-Consolidator-Grant gefördert wird.
