Katarina Damčevićs Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Semiotik von Hassrede und kontroversen Symbolen in (Post-)Konfliktgesellschaften mit einem regionalen Schwerpunkt auf Südosteuropa. Der Titel ihrer Dissertation lautet „Semiotik von Hassrede und umstrittenen Symbolen: Der 'Za dom spremni' Ustaša-Gruß im zeitgenössischen Kroatien“, die sie 2023 an der Universität Tartu in Estland verteidigte. Für ihre Forschung erhielt Katarina Damčević mehrere Stipendien, unter anderem vom Dangerous Speech Project in den USA, dem Humanitarian Law Center in Belgrad und dem seeFField Fellowship Programm der Universität Regensburg. Katarina Damčević ist Mitbegründerin des Zentrums für Holocaust- und Genozidforschung in Südosteuropa, das seinen Sitz in Kroatien an der Fakultät für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften der Universität Rijeka hat. Sie lehrt an der Universität Tartu und ist Mitglied des Redaktionsteams der Zeitschrift Südosteuropa (Brill). Im März 2024 trat Katarina dem IOS-Projekt „Konflikt und Kooperation im östlichen Europa. Die Folgen der Neukonfiguration politischer, ökonomischer und sozialer Räume seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges (KonKoop)“.
