Franz Steiner Verlag has published the volume "Vertreibung und Erinnerung. Forschungsstand und Geschichtspolitik im östlichen Europa" [Expulsion and Memory: The State of Research and the Politics of History in Eastern Europe], edited by Katrin Boeckh, head of the IOS-based Research Center "Kultur und Erinnerung: Heimatvertriebene und Aussiedler in Bayern".

Eighty years after the expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe, this book presents a comprehensive international synthesis of the state of research for the first time. The volume brings together leading historians from Eastern Europe who have come together for this unique collaborative project. At the same time, it critically examines how this history has been politically remembered — and also instrumentalised — to this day. The volume opens up new approaches to the scholarly study of flight and expulsion in Eastern Europe, moving beyond national narratives. Those seeking to understand how cultures of remembrance emerge, and why they are being re-examined following the end of Eastern European state socialism, will find well-founded, multifaceted answers here.
