As part of the series "Südosteuropäische Arbeiten" the new book by IOS research fellow Svetlana Suveica "Post-imperial Encounters. Transnational Designs of Bessarabia in Paris and Elsewhere 1917-1922" was published.
The book reveals multiple geopolitical visions and identity choices of local inhabitants in Bessarabia after World War I. As Romania acquired the former Russian province in 1918, regional (imperial and revolutionary) elites joined Russian White émigrés in Paris and elsewhere to propel the idea of Bessarabia’s return to a restored (imperial) Russia. The transnational network’s activity at the Paris Peace Conference and the impact of this enterprise on its protagonists and local Bessarabians is revealed in this book.
