Internship Opportunities at the IOS

28.04.2026 Internship

The Leibniz Institute for East and South-East European Studies (IOS) is one of the world’s leading research institutions specialising in the study of historical, political and economic change in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The IOS is highly international, both in its activities and its staff. It combines basic research with the development of research infrastructures and extensive science communication, and it supports early-career researchers.

The Institute is equally committed to providing students with their first professional and internship experiences. The IOS therefore offers students the opportunity to undertake an unpaid internship in the fields of history, politics or economics. Internships generally last four weeks.

Interns at the IOS work on research projects (research and analysis) under academic supervision and/or gain editorial experience in one of the specialist editorial teams based at the IOS. They also familiarise themselves with general tasks within the departments and are occasionally involved in event organisation.

Due to the high number of applications, this internship opportunity is exclusively aimed at students who are required to complete a compulsory internship under their degree regulations.

Applicants are expected to be studying a subject relevant to work at the IOS; specialist knowledge of Eastern/South-Eastern Europe is not essential but is an advantage.

Applications must be submitted by email at least three months before the desired start date of the internship to: praktikum@ios-regensburg.de . Applications must include the following documents (in PDF format only):

  • Cover letter including details of the desired internship period
  • CV
  • Certificate of enrolment
  • Extract from the study regulations regarding the compulsory internship

Please note that the IOS cannot guarantee that successful applicants will be able to complete their internship during their preferred period. Furthermore, the IOS is unable to supervise interns in August or during the period from late December to early January.

Third-country nationals (i.e. applicants who are not citizens of the EU or EEA) are advised to apply as early as possible in order to clarify any issues relating to residence permits and visa.

All personal data provided will be deleted at the latest upon completion of the selection process, usually after three months.
