“Handbuch zur Geschichte Südosteuropas”: Pre-orders for Volume 3 Now Open
Pre-orders are now open for the 3rd volume of the “Handbook on the History of Southeast Europe” compiled by the IOS. Edited by Konrad Clewing (IOS, Regensburg) and Hannes Grandits (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), the volume “Staatlichkeit und Politik in Südosteuropa nach 1800” (Statehood and Politics in Southeast Europe after 1800) concludes the handbook project's wide-ranging thematic area of rule, statehood and politics covering over 2,000 years of history - from Roman antiquity to the present day.
The volume, which will be available in bookshops from November 18, 2024, starts in the regional “saddle time” (beginning in 1790) and describes the social and state upheavals faced by the two empires (Habsburg Monarchy and Ottoman Empire) as well as the later nation states. In doing so, he addresses main lines of development in the history of Southeast Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, ending in the 2020s. This is done on 1164 pages, in 9 large chapters, a 180-page bibliography and, among other things, with the help of 21 color maps, some of which have been newly created or updated.
The “Handbook on the History of Southeast Europe” is published by De Gruyter Oldenbourg and a long-term project launched at the IOS in 2010. The seven-volume handbook, which brings together some 90 leading Southeast European scholars, offers comprehensive and fresh insights for academics, teachers and the general public.
