Call for Papers: Conference of junior scholars in the field of East European studies, June 29 – July 1, 2023, Regensburg. Co-organized by the IOS. Application deadline: January 31, 2023.

The 30th annual conference of young experts on Eastern Europe (JOE), organized by the German Society for East European Studies (DGO)/Young DGO,  takes place from June 29 to July 1, 2023, in Regensburg.

the Young DGO invites advanced undergraduates, doctoral students, and recent PhDs from various disciplines to the JOE Conference 2023 in Regensburg to present their research projects related to Eastern Europe. Participants will have the opportunity to present their projects and discuss them with other prospective scholars and distinguished representatives of the field. The conference offers an overview of current research on Eastern Europe in German-speaking countries and facilitates an interdisciplinary exchange on Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia as well as networking among young scholars.

Project outlines of no more than 500 words from the humanities, social sciences, law, economics, and other related disciplines are welcome and can be submitted until January 31, 2023. In addition, proposals for panels consisting of three papers may also be submitted. Contributions can be submitted and delivered in German and English. Passive knowledge of German is necessary, however, as there will be no interpretation.

The conference is organized by the German Society for East European Studies (DGO) / Young DGO, the Research Center for Eastern Europe (FSO) at the University of Bremen, the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, and the Institute for Eastern European Law. The costs for accommodation and meals will be covered by the organizers. Travel costs cannot be covered.

Suggestions for panels

  • abstract of maximum 500 words which relates to research question, findings, theoretical approach and method (foreseen for publication in the conference reader)
  • information about the status of the research project and institutional affiliation
  • summary of maximum 200 words with the title, topic and target of the panel
  • abstracts and information on the individual texts (see the left column)
  • a panel should consist of about three speakers, and represent at least two different institutions

Selection decisions will be made by the end of February 2023.

In the case of acceptance to the conference, a long paper of about 3 000 words must be submitted by 1 May 2023. It will be delivered to other participants prior to the conference.
